Kitchen Echoes Storytelling

Kitchen Echoes Storytelling is a web-based sound archive developed from fieldwork, sound-visual experiments, and tactile listening prototypes with Chinese migrant restaurant communities.

The project asks how listening can become a form of acknowledgement when language, visibility, or direct speech are difficult.

The work developed through field recording and observation around Chinese migrant restaurant communities in Camberwell, London, focusing on everyday labour, sonic environments, mediated listening, and partial representation.

The project uses field recording, sound segmentation, listening interfaces, image-text pairing, and audience contribution as methods for holding fragments of labour, atmosphere, memory, and presence.

A small touch-triggered sound object installed in the exhibition space, inviting visitors to activate fragments of restaurant sound through physical contact.

A Framer-based public-facing archive that brings together restaurant maps, sound recordings, fieldwork materials, and audience contribution tools.

The archive includes scroll-triggered sound segments, embedded audio, variables tracking listening status, a browser-based voice recorder connected to Airtable, and an interactive map prototype built with p5.js/Mappa.js.

The project can develop as a distributed sound archive connected to Dāo Dao, workshops, field notes, and future community storytelling projects. Related account: @kitch_endoor.
